Violence and Means of Expression
Violence and Means of Expression
I was invited by a friend in Bosra al-Sham to attend a session addressing issues of non-violence, social problems, and the culture of peace and non-violence. The session was of particular importance as it delved into the problems we face, as the saying goes, “It comes to the pain.” I speak from my personal experience where I benefited and strengthened my character through this session, playing an effective role in improving my psychological well-being.
I struggled with a weakness in facing challenges, whether in society in general or in personal relationships. This weakness stemmed from the continuous negative thoughts in our society, justified by “traditions and customs” and other forms of violence against women, considered a widespread issue. Many women face insults, verbal abuse, and ill-treatment throughout their lives.
The session’s host touched upon the issue of violence against women, rooted in the prevailing ignorance in our society, leading to psychological harm to women. This includes threats and arbitrary deprivation of freedoms, whether in the context of public or private life.
I, on behalf of myself and all abused women, express our opposition to all forms of violence against women, whether by individuals in society, family members, or even the state itself. I urge you to support the fight against violence against women through your dedicated sessions to promote women’s rights and raise awareness in our communities. Violence remains a barrier to achieving equality, development, and peace, as well as realizing human rights for women and girls.
I encourage myself to speak about my experience and express my opinion, echoing the sentiments of most women on your esteemed page, “Mimbar Houran for Non-Violence,” as a protected and supportive platform for the community in general and women’s rights in particular.
