The Unity of Syrians Above All Divisions
The Unity of Syrians Above All Divisions
By Aya Mohammed
Sectarian voices cannot represent a people known throughout history for their diversity, nor can narrow slogans express the identity of any component of Syrian society. Sectarianism does not build a homeland, save a land, or shape a future worthy of the sacrifices of all Syrians. Those who truly represent us are the ones who rejected division, stood against colonial projects, and refused to cooperate with foreign powers against their own people.
I am represented by the mujahid Sheikh Saleh Al-Ali, a man who remains a symbol of unity and honor, whose noble stances I take pride in to this day. I am represented by his famous saying: “If the Sunnis are in danger, then we are all Sunnis.” This phrase embodies the meaning of national brotherhood that transcends narrow affiliations.
I am also represented by the mujahid Ibrahim Hanano of Idlib, Sheikh Hassan Al-Kharrat of Ghouta, Sultan Pasha Al-Atrash of As-Suwayda, and Ayyash Al-Haj of Deir Ezzor. These are the true sons of Syria—men who carried the banner of struggle for one homeland, one land, one people, and one history.
I am not represented by those who seek today to expel or exclude Syrians simply because they disagree with them, regardless of their city or background. But I am represented by Fawzi Al-Qawuqji of Hama, the mujahid whose name is etched in the pages of national resistance.
Those who raise sectarian slogans today are only a small minority across all groups. The vast majority of Syrians transcend sectarianism; they believe in the unity of Syria and in the strong social fabric born from a shared history.
The Syrian street has grown weary of hateful sectarian alignments and divisions. It can no longer bear further fragmentation. This is where national and moral responsibility emerges—especially among educated and conscious elites—who must guide public discourse toward calm and unity.
Put your trust in Almighty God, the protector and guardian. Spread love among one another, remain optimistic, and seek excuses for each other. Life is short, and our time in this world is but a blink of an eye. It is not worth wasting it on conflicts that bring nothing but weakness and disunity.
