Peace in Hauran
Peace in Hauran
Athila Busra– Busra
Wars begin first in the minds and souls, and with time and the right conditions, they manifest in reality. War does not start with the firing of cannons or the rain of bullets; when that happens, it is already too late. Therefore, when we seek to resist violence, we must start with the minds and souls.
Violence cannot be justified in any form unless it is driven by fear or greed. Wars and violent acts belong to the animalistic stage; they are not related to true strength. Most issues and problems can be solved without resorting to violence. To overcome this instinctive way, humans must start with themselves. Nonviolence provides an opportunity to begin a new phase of peace, trust, and tolerance. Any conflict resolved through nonviolent means leaves no trace of hatred in the hearts of enemies but transforms them into friends.
Since the beginning of events in Hauran, protests have been demanding justice and freedom peacefully. Nonviolence is a method of political and social action to achieve goals without violating the rights of others, based on recognizing the other. Nonviolence is a preference for truth and justice, incompatible with submission. It is a principle built on foundations and rules.
As events unfolded in Hauran, crimes and problems increased. Elders of the country resolved them peacefully through a reconciliation committee comprising prominent figures and intellectuals in the region. This committee received complaints from the people and worked towards finding a solution that would benefit all parties without resorting to force.
A few months ago, a tribal reconciliation was held in the town of Al-Jiza in the eastern countryside of Daraa between the Al-Hariri and Al-Khatib families regarding a murder and injury incident. The agreement involved exiling the murderer, paying blood money, and reconciling after efforts from town and regional leaders.
Some time ago, a young man from the city of Busra al-Sham was kidnapped, but he was returned to his family through popular committees. The ransom was also returned to the young man’s family after they had paid it to the kidnappers. The family elders expressed their gratitude to everyone who contributed to this case.
Gandhi set an example, saying, “The only appropriate means for you to cross the ocean is to board a ship. If, instead, you try to ride a car, you will quickly sink.”
No matter how tyrannical, strength will crumble before the morality of the other party. Therefore, we must confront violence to achieve a secure society where everyone lives in peace and stability without losing any resources. Everyone desires a healthy homeland, free from scars that are difficult to eliminate.
