Hammurabi” is a figure from my country”
Karim Busra – Busra
An activist in humanitarian and charitable organizations, this name is known throughout all of Houran as ‘Hammurabi.’
He graduated from Damascus University, Faculty of Science, with a major in mathematics. He worked in teaching during the peaceful Syrian revolution, a young man of good morals, beloved by all. He comes from a middle-income family, with his father being a history professor at Damascus University.
After the outbreak of protests and the continuation of their peaceful nature, and with the escalation of events in the city of Basra Al-Sham, he dedicated himself to serving the revolution. He left the teaching field and engaged in peaceful activism. His task was to coordinate protests and sit-ins. He was arrested multiple times by the Syrian regime but continued his peaceful participation under all circumstances, even after the area was besieged.
After the revolution ignited, and the bloodshed began with civilian casualties and detainees in the regime’s prisons, he worked on securing support for the families of the affected through contributors from the city’s residents inside and outside Syria. He also connected with charitable organizations, forming an office to care for orphans and children of detainees, ensuring monthly allowances for them with the help of a local committee.
He also played a crucial role in resolving disputes and conflicts, actively contributing to several reconciliation incidents in the area involving the elders of Basra inside and outside. He had a significant impact on settling disputes and seeking reform among people.
He was active in forming a committee to combat the coronavirus in the city of Basra Al-Sham. He played a role in collecting donations to build an oxygen plant, which served the area of Basra Al-Sham and its surrounding villages, providing oxygen throughout the virus spread. This eased the costs for the infected and ensured treatment, especially in advanced cases.
He participated in the local council’s activities in his city, contributing to the construction of wells. In the absence of electricity and its scarcity, he contributed to an alternative energy project, installing a solar energy system for some of the city’s wells and repairing the water network, delivering it to residents after four years of interruption by collecting donations from the residents of Basra Al-Sham inside and outside.
He was an active member of the Civil Committee of the city of Basra Al-Sham, contributing to the repair and maintenance of the electricity network when malfunctions occurred. These contributions extended to Basra and the surrounding villages.
“Hammurabi” still roams on his bike in his city and nearby villages, inspecting the water network, the operation of wells, the electricity network, and facilitating Red Crescent aid delivery to the city. He organizes the distribution fairly among the city’s residents as he is an elected representative for the Red Crescent in the city.”
