Effective Communication as an Alternative to Violence
Effective Communication as an Alternative to Violence

Violence is dealing with something or someone with more force than necessary to express power and pressure, and this violence can lead to destruction and tension.
Communication is the most important means of understanding people, dealing with them, and grasping their thoughts in order to convey what is on one’s mind to others and clarify intentions. So, what is communication, and what is its relationship to violence? How can communication be positive or negative?
Violence is negative communication among humans; it is ineffective and harmful communication for the other person, damaging their will. It takes various forms, including physical violence such as hitting and kicking, moral or psychological violence like humiliation or mockery, social violence like spreading rumors and ruining relationships, and sexual violence such as harassment.
To apply non-violence in our country and society, we must use the best communication methods, which is effective communication.
Non-violence is a term that can fall under the labels of positive or effective communication. To solidify non-violence, efforts must be combined starting from neighborhood committees to higher social or educational institutions to achieve greater understanding and awareness. How can this happen?
Attendance and interest in communication sessions conducted by non-governmental organizations are one way to bring perspectives closer. Participation in civil associations that operate in neighborhoods is also a means of positive communication.
We must increase awareness that violence is not the best means of dealing with or asserting rights. Effective communication, listening to others, respecting all opinions, and incorporating a policy of dialogue into our interactions, all of these keep us away from forms of violence. Local committees specialized in resolving complex disputes and mediators among elders in any issue that leads to clash or misunderstanding between conflicting parties are also effective means of positive communication. There are many examples of the role of effective committees and tribal elders in resolving recent disputes between multiple parties, leading to reconciliation and tolerance.
All these peaceful methods ensure that every individual in society gets their rights, justice prevails, and security is established, putting an end to violence.”
