Destruction of Drugs: Granting Hope and Peace to the Community
Destruction of Drugs: Granting Hope and Peace to the Community
Sara Al-Mohammed
Drug abuse is one of the most dangerous afflictions plaguing our society today. It has spread in a terrifying and extensive manner, sparing neither the young nor the old.
The state of a drug addict is akin to a living corpse; it is a person whose soul is tethered to their body, fighting for survival. They appear frail, almost paralyzed, having lost their health and becoming stumbling individuals. They are unconscious, acting ruthlessly without regard for the feelings of others. Their sole concern is obtaining substances that numb their minds, diverting themselves from their misery and reality.
While I do not justify their actions, the increasing number of drug users in our society is alarming, with a significant portion being teenagers. We find ourselves trapped in this problem today, and it seems that our community leaders are not addressing the issue adequately; instead, they are mostly resorting to prosecution.
Anyone living in our region and caught in the grip of this suffocating and overwhelming crisis will find it challenging to break free. However, it is the families close to them who can offer the most help and awareness, providing a safe space for them. We should not wait until they lose their mental balance and are transformed into individuals capable of contributing much to society.
Drugs now pose the greatest harm to families and society as a whole. They serve as a major catalyst for the spread of moral corruption, violence, and crime. Over the past two years, we have witnessed horrifying crimes, with drug abuse being a significant contributing factor.
Today, we must start proposing and implementing solutions to help addicts and curb the overall spread of drugs. While we may be able to contain the disaster to some extent today, we may become incapable of handling what might happen in the future. It is imperative to establish a health center in our area that serves the entire Daraa region and provides free counseling for parents who wish to help their children or for individuals struggling with addiction themselves.
Our efforts should not stop there; we should seek the support of civil society organizations to conduct extensive awareness campaigns targeting schools and places where young people gather. We can be the lifeline for anyone tempted by drugs. Here, we can be the cornerstone that rebuilds the community anew.
By taking these steps, we can eliminate many forms of violence we have experienced, such as theft, assault on others’ properties, and the violation of their rights, as well as murder. All these incidents occur under the influence of drugs.
Each one of us has a role to play and can leave a lasting impact in reducing this crisis that has engulfed our society. We understand the severity of these toxins and their profound consequences on human life. This social scourge is among the most dangerous, if not the most dangerous, so we must unite and collaborate to assist addicts and provide preventive measures against the dangers of drugs threatening our entire community.
