Between the Past of Study and the Present of Education
Alaa Al-Hazeemi – Busra
Have we ever thought about what has changed in schools between the past and today?
I am one of the students who used to suffer in school, thinking it was a punishment for me!
Some teachers treated students extremely harshly, and our bullying, as students, was considered normal. They didn’t care about the potential psychological problems that abused students might face, such as fear, introversion, or lack of self-confidence. This could escalate into social problems like students bullying each other, fights, physical abuse, and humiliation. It might even lead to non-compliance with teachers’ orders and disobedience. For many students, escaping from school was the only solution to this harsh reality!
Our sports teacher asked us to bring sports attire for the lesson. One of my friends came without the required attire, and the teacher scolded him in front of the students. On the following day, he again came without the attire, and the teacher expelled him, demanding the presence of his guardian. The result was embarrassing for the student and his father, who couldn’t afford the required clothing!
The teacher should have asked the student about the reason in a friendly manner, without resorting to punishment or scolding. However, he did not think of a positive way to solve the problem; instead, he exacerbated the situation, making the problem worse.
This approach in dealing with students had psychological effects, pushing them to escape from school and distance themselves from education at an early age, engaging in freelance work that might not be suitable for their age. The lack of awareness among parents about the seriousness of school dropout exacerbates the problem. When they are forced into the troubles of life at such a young age, they may face exploitation, which could have been prevented.
Gradually, several laws were enacted to prevent violence in schools, significantly changing the course of the educational process. Rejecting violence in education creates a rational and understanding generation. Education is not just about reading and writing; it also aims to teach respect, noble values, and self-confidence, to build a generation that contributes to a balanced society striving for peace.
Parents’ cooperation with schools is crucial in this development process. Many parents do their best to buy school supplies. Moreover, many teachers now believe that student abuse has many negative effects. These indicators show a growth in thinking that was not present in the past, with support and trust from parents and love and rationality from teachers.
A stable life requires a generation with enough awareness that violence only begets violence, while nonviolence builds a generation capable of tolerance and generosity, rising above trivial matters to achieve desired goals. In a world based on compassion for oneself and others.
I wished we would reach that day, but the war in my country has caused many children to drop out of school, and our cycle in the circle of violence continues to this day
