As-Suwayda in the Heart of Syria… A Call for Syrian Unity
By Khaled Al-Hourani
In recent times, blessed calls have emerged to launch a campaign entitled “As-Suwayda in the Heart of Syria.” This initiative reflects the deep need of Syrians for such sincere efforts—efforts that are not about display or posturing, but that stem from the heart and converge toward one goal: saving the country, without demonizing or blaming the other.
The true beginning of any inclusive national project must be a clear and explicit condemnation of all violations committed against Syrians, regardless of the perpetrators. Reconciliation and trust cannot be opened without acknowledging the wound, alongside a serious and transparent demand for accountability of those responsible for these violations. Accountability is not revenge; it is the foundation of justice that prevents further bleeding and closes the door to those who justify seeking foreign help or drifting into desperate choices.
Furthermore, shielding Syrian civilians from any conflict has become an urgent necessity, not just a moral demand. A Syrian should be a source of support and refuge for his fellow Syrian—not a burden on him, nor an adversary. Today, more than ever, we need every citizen to feel that they have protection in their homeland, so they are not forced to seek refuge abroad or rely on others for strength.
When we secure for the Syrian person their dignity and rights, we strip away the justifications from their hand before we reproach them for their choices. A homeland is not the authority that changes and fades away—it is the people who endure, and the national unity that preserves the Syrian entity from fragmentation and loss.
Therefore, “As-Suwayda in the Heart of Syria” is not merely a slogan, but a collective responsibility that reminds us that our destiny is one, and that our salvation can only be achieved together.
