A Journey Towards Constructive Solutions
A Journey Towards Constructive Solutions
Um Muhammad – Tafas
People differ in their methods of resolving conflicts when they occur, as the cultural and educational context among people varies. This, in turn, affects how conflicts are managed and solutions are sought.
Conflict Levels; Individual or Group of Individuals
Conflict levels vary; there is the personal level, which refers to internal conflict within an individual, involving their thoughts, emotions, feelings, and values. Then there is interpersonal conflict, occurring between two or more individuals, resulting from differences at the personal level or differences in perspectives on achieving goals.
Reconciliation is Important for Social Cohesion
Reconciliation can protect society from disintegration, division, and differences. It prevents bloodshed and preserves lives and properties, maintaining the diverse components of society.
Most causes of conflicts stem from the lack of alignment between the desires and actions of different parties, or due to inflexibility, rigid opinions, and diminished tolerance in the face of differences in values and cultures. It can also arise from unmet basic social needs such as belonging, represented by love, participation, collaboration, and social appreciation, manifested by feeling important and respected.
Conflicts in Hauran
Many years of war in Syria have altered the military control map, resulting in economic, social, and security repercussions. Despite attempts to revive tribal customs during this critical period, tribal conflicts remain prevalent.
In Hauran, clan conflicts and disputes have escalated in a society where tribalism is an integral part. Tribal conflicts have roots in accumulated revenge, leading to deadly feuds, involving incidents of revenge killings, as well as social and economic problems like divorce, property burning, and theft.
Society in Hauran is tribalistic, with large tribes covering Hauran, villages, or even at the city level. When conflicts arise between these tribes, the outcomes can be extremely detrimental. In one incident in the village of “Tafas,” the number of casualties from both sides exceeded fifteen, all due to tribal partisanship, despite belonging to the same environment, culture, and identity.
“The Conflict over Inheritance” constitutes a significant portion of conflicts within the same family. The tribal society still adheres to customs that may result in injustice to some parties at the expense of others. Such conflicts lead to family breakdowns among siblings and contribute to the disintegration of the community as a whole.
Steps to Resolve Conflicts
Analyzing the roots and causes of conflicts is an essential part of the solution. This involves identifying the different needs and interests of conflicting parties and then encouraging dialogue and understanding between them to achieve common interests. Additionally, using mediation and negotiation means to reach an acceptable agreement for all parties is crucial. It is important to apply justice and equality in addressing the conflict.
Conflict resolution is not an easy task and may take a long time and sacrifices from all conflicting parties. However, seeking to resolve conflicts and achieve peace is worth the efforts, as it can lead to a better future for everyone.
